Now that the high school baseball season is over, here's a sad observation: There were absolutely no high school baseball posts during the high school baseball season. Maybe the "improved" message board wasn't as improved as y'all thought. I think the numbers pre-improvement and post-improvement (for any categories) would be interesting.

Sidney only lost 1 starter from last years GWOC North Champion & District Runner-Up squad. The pitching is where Sidney will be strong with Brad Yinger, Joe Engle, & Nathan Strome. The lineup still has the power that it did last year although losing All-State Catcher Jude DeLoye will hurt a little bit. Sidney also has a few guys that would of played last year but had some off the field issues. There's really no holes or weakness in the Yellow Jackets squad.

I would agree that pre-season favorites are Carlisle and Madison. However, just like in basketball, I have to say watch out for the Hounds. Almost all the starters back and players are maturing. I say they will be right there at the end. Monroe lost several seniors. Not too sure about Waynesville. Here's how I see it:

1. Carlisle
2. Dixie
3. Madison
4. Monroe
5. Waynesville
6. Preble Shawnee
7. Northridge

It should be a very competitive year in the Buckeye Division.

In the other division should be between Carlisle and Madison, with Monroe and Waynesville with an outside chance. This will come down to pitching and who has enough of it, Madison returns whole staff from last year and adds another arm, Carlisle lost 2 starters from last year but returns #2 and #3 starters and Monroe loses #1 starter and Ott. Not sure what Waynesville has back but know they lost their #1 starter and a reliever from last year, Dixie will be improved, Shawnee has a new coach and Northridge struggled to field a Varsity and JV team last year

They have a good group returning. Bellbrook, Oakwood Eaton will also be in the mix. I think Eaton will surprise alot of people eventhough they lost eight seniors last year. This spring should be fun to watch. Good luck to all swbl teams

In my opinion the GWOC North is wide open: Vandalia has an arm that can beat anyone, Northmont has depth and good athletes, Troy returns the best 1-2 pitching punch, Sidney has a well rounded team with depth at most spots and Piqua has strong position players (someone will need to assert himself on the hill).

Look for the winner to have a couple of losses and three teams to be fighting it out the last week.

It has to start with Vandalia. always does.
Here is my prediction

1. Vandalia - Dumbler is tough to beat
2. Northmont - we always compete for the title
3. Sidney - lots returning, not sure they can do it again though
4. Troy - good pitching, could upset some people
5. Piqua

I don't know if any of you were fortunate enough to be in Columbus Friday, but I was, and I was one of the lucky ones. Rick Gold, former baseball coach at Miami East and Piqua, and currently the assistant coach at Wittenberg, was inducted into the Ohio Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame. To me, coach Gold was one of the best baseball coaches I have ever seen, and Friday afternoon he was at his best. Telling stories about former players, coaches, family members, it was a treat. I was lucky, or I guess unlucky enough to compete against some of Coach Gold's teams, and later umpired some of his games. The respect that his players, players' parents, and other coaches and umpires had for Coach Gold is just outstanding. The man does his job, is always prepared, always smiling, and he makes you feel good about the game of baseball. Coach Gold, you are an inspiration to many, many players and parents both around southwestern Ohio, and the entire state. Thank you for being such a terrific role model for your players, other coaches, and umpires alike. The name, Rick Gold, baseball Hall of Famer, is such a fitting name.
