Why "create" a lone planet where 99.997% of everything ever on it goes extinct? Why "create" an orb that gets smashed into by comets and asteroids (where possibly everything gets destroyed)? Why "create" an omniverse teeming with planets that have no hope of ever sustaining life? Why "create" a place that spreads out into a mammoth heat sink of death?

Strobel And Behe: The Toxic Twins

The thoroughly-dishonest Strobel is a huckster typist who's well aware of the audience he's writing for: the non-critical pew pounders who aren't afraid to twist and shout for their silly notions.

Minority opinionist Behe's "work" has been raked over the coals more times that I care to mention. Paul Doland sums it up best when he states "if the cell was Darwin's "black box", then "god" would have to be Behe's ultimate "black box", a mystery that can never be peered into". There's nothing "irreducibly complex" about the hypocrisy it takes to knock the presumption of cell simplicity while coddling the simplicity of an "intelligent designer" (especially the hypothetical one that Behe chooses to fix his wagon to).

The scientific method vs. "goddidit": which one advances the human cause, and which one stunts it?

have found their candidate, and its McCain!

The rapture wackos want the end times, so that they can be raptured into heaven without dying. McCain offers the best promise for huge wars that no one survives, just like Jabus wants.

(The "Left Behind" series are actually the last five books of the Bible.)

And the economy has done so great the last few years... you can see the finger of Jesus Himself, who rewards the faithful with lots and lots of money. Remember, Jesus is a commie, and he only said that stuff about helping the poor because he needed the righteous people to kill Him, so he could save us from our sins. So all that help the poor stuff, thats just commie propaganda, stuck in there to get Jesus killed.

McCain the unity candidate: the people who want to blow up the world for Jebus, and the people who want to wallow in their worldly wealth... united behind one man: McCain!

The last week has shown one of the biggest examples of faith: the evidence of things not seen....

The oil companies have plenty of money to drill, and land to do it on.

But drilling for oil is expensive, and that expense would decrease their short term profits.

Of course, they would find new oil resources, and that would lower the price of oil in the future.

That, of course, would _decrease their long term profits_.

So, why the h*ll would they drill???????

I'd usually post all things Brittany under the running "The French Connection" thread on Page Five (5) of this board, but after reading Kermit Rowe's side-story in the Sports section of today's paper, commentary HAD to be of a more front-and-center nature.

Anyone following the "Smart Talk" blog already knows that Smart has re-upped for another round with Point Chaud. Basic sense readily explains this: she's a good player, and Sprimont needs as many good players as they can find. But the Britt is peddling a different tale as to how she arrived at her decision: it was all about the Yahweh. No surprise there, until you start reading the story.

At first, she was hesitant (?!?), then came to the point where she said "I'll probably go". Here's where the wheels dislodge from the caboose: "Then I said, 'Lord in a week, I'm going to go ahead and say yes. If you don't want me to go, show me during this week'". Not only did she put her Lord God to the test with that proclamation, she did it on HER timeframe and terms. Some might call that being "prayerful", but it was clearly an ultimatum. What's sad is that I know SO MANY "Christian" theists whose life choices are made with that blown-to-the-winds theology, yet when these pinata-whacks fail in horrid fashion, they blame everyone EXCEPT the dispatcher.

The rest of the piece has her admitting to being little more than a house organ for a dude who hardly needs the PR, so I'd be amazed if her next fling in Euro sports didn't resemble her last one.

Au revoir, enfant terrible. A prudent man concealeth knowledge; but the heart of fools proclaimeth foolishness (Proverbs 12:23).

What would Christians want share it and evangelize? As long as they are taken care of what would they care about their neighbor?

I still don't see how it is malevolent.

Is there any denial that each of us do "bad" things that society doesn't catch us or punish us for? Of course not.

The question is should God/the universe/whatever hold us accountable for those things?

If you say "no", then you are comfortable in putting your fate in the hands of nothing or God/the universe/whatever if you are wrong.

For those of us who do beleive there is a God, I think it is reasonable to expect to be held accountable for our deeds.

And I know that I personally, although a good person by society's standards, do enough bad things that I could not make up for them. Heck, my wife can attest to that by the fact that I am eternally in the doghouse and only get out by her grace and forgiveness.

So having to rely on the grace of God is a gift I welcome.

It's a far cry between the temporary discomfort of modern reality and the infinite immersion into "flame that cannot be quenched". Your kids obviously don't know what the "real pain" of indoctrination entails (or, they do, and they're just behaving typically).

No Catch-22 here; I obviously don't subscribe to belief in the Christian deity. I only frame it as malevolent AS IT'S BEEN WRITTEN and widely accepted as. As I said in my previous post, I doubt that a perfect being would write such contradictory things about itself, and I doubly doubt that such a being would've allowed such misconstructions to carry on as long as they have. If that isn't the case, however, you could be dealing with the unpredictability of one mongering mamma-jamma.

All of which makes "worship" a somewhat misplaced description of what's going on; "fearful capitulation" is closer to the truth.

But yet I ground them from World of Warcraft, deny them things they want, etc. and follow through on the punishments. Which they, of course, call torture.

But you just caught yourself in a catch 22. If you believe in God and believe he has the power to do that to people, then you will accept him and it is a non-issue.

If you don't believe in him, you certainly can't believe he is malevolent.

The Bible didn't show up in its accepted form until the Catholic Church put it together back during the fourth or fifth century CE. Before that, Christianity was just another odd sect tucked into a backwater of the Roman Empire.

It's just plain cruel to call your deity one of "boundless love", while simultaneously claiming that it's created a special place of hideous torture for anyone who doesn't show it the proper respect. That's malevolent, no matter how it's spun. Whether a deity would actually write that as canon is dubious and debatable, but for superstitiously-inclined peoples to write these things doesn't surprise me one bit.

And therein lies a tremendous problem for this particular flavor of theism: paradox.

It's nigh-impossible to "define" Christianity, as it was around centuries before the various teachings were collected into book form by self-appointed salesmen. Sadly, that collection was badly proofread, as it's hard to imagine a deity of "pure love" treating anyone or anything with such malevolence.

According to my progrezzively-churched acquaintences, they've simply opted to fixate upon the positive instead of the negative; they can't stand the nastinezz of the past (and rightly so), and don't want to see it repeated. A lofty goal, but they're still trying to square it through the flawed prism of the Bible, a strategy that ultimately caters to and alienates.

When basing your worldview on such foggy documents, should it come as such a surprise that you'd call yourself ANYTHING?
